HUSAYN. THE SELFLESS.

More than 13 centuries ago, Imam Husayn and seventy-two thirsty men along with their families stood in front of a tyrannical empire and sacrificed their lives to show us that standing up against injustice is the ultimate sacrifice.

The Walk

WALK WITH HUSAYN

Karbala Walk is a mourning procession commemorating the martyrdom of Imam Husayn (p), the grandson of Prophet Muhammad (p) in the year 680 in present day Karbala, Iraq. The day of this tragedy is called Ashura.

Imam Husayn (p) lived at a time when a tyrant named Yazid was the ruler of the Middle East. Like many of today's rulers, Yazid enslaved his people, violated their basic human rights and led a life devoid of morality. Along with a small group of companions and family members, Imam Husayn (p) took a stand against the tyranny and oppression of Yazid. After being deprived of food and water for several days by the army of Yazid, Imam Husayn (p) along with his family and friends were mercilessly killed and the women and children in his camp were captured and abused by Yazid's savage army.

The captive women and children were forced to walk a distance well over 500 miles while bound and shackled to each other. They walked from Karbala to Kufa and then Kufa to Damascus. However, instead of being disgraced, the women and children proudly relayed the story of Husayn (p) and preached the values he sacrificed for every where they went. In order to honor the brave captives, millions around the globe march through the streets spreading the message of Imam Husayn (p).

We are determined to uphold the message of Imam Husayn (p); a message that tells us never to bow down to oppressors, to stand up for the rights of the weak, to seek true freedom in our lives and to live in peace. This is true Islam, the Islam of Prophet Muhammad (p) and his noble family.

We march on the streets in solidarity with Imam Husayn (p), condemning Yazid and the oppressive rulers following in his footsteps today. The famous saying "Every day is Ashura and every land is Karbala" resonates deeply with us and the abuse of power around the world today testifies to the truth of this statement. Through the teachings of Imam Husayn (p) we are morally obligated to raise a voice for ALL the oppressed people anywhere in the world. Every day is Ashura and every land is Karbala, and where there is an Ashura, there will always be a Husayn (p)

(p) denotes peace be upon him.
